Brighton vs Man Utd LIVE: Result and reaction from Premier League clash as Mac Allister scores late penalty

Brighton and Hove Albion welcome Manchester United to the AmEx on Thursday for a Premier League which could prove decisive for both the hosts’ European hopes and the visitors’ UEFA Champions League aspirations. The top four might be beyond the likes of the Seagulls based on the league table after United beat Aston Villa to widen the gap. However, the scrap between Brighton and the Villans is well and truly still on. Roberto de Zerbi’s men have a few games in hand over their European rivals and will want to take as many points as possible.

Brighton: Jakub Moder, Tariq Lamptey, Jeremy Sarmiento and Adam Lallana are all out while De Zerbi will not take any risks with Evan Ferguson either. Joel Veltman was injured during the thumping of Wolves but could be passed fit if it is not too serious. Pascal Gross could go to right back despite his superb double over the weekend with Kaoru Mitoma, Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill all expected to return to the starting XI.

The NCAA has begun a state-of-business review taking a top-to-bottom analysis of the entire association, NCAA president Charlie Baker. The association has hired Boston-based Bain & Company, a top-10 global management consulting firm, to handle the review.

This evaluation comes at a time when the NCAA’s future role in college athletics is itself under review. The NCAA has failed to get its arms around NIL and continues to fight lawsuits on several fronts. What will the NCAA even be if courts determine athletes are employees?

Big East commissioner Val Ackerman believes the NCAA as a whole is sometimes inefficient and undervalued. Failure to capitalize on that value has led to some of the association’s current problems.

“There isn’t a clearly defined commercial unit within the national office. In my opinion, it’s failing,” Ackerman said during an extended conversation with CBS Sports. “The NCAA is a billion-dollar concern because of the money they bring in from March Madness. I think we would all benefit from a clearly defined structure, business unit that would be run by a chief marketing officer and a chief commercial officer who would be entrusted with oversight over television with a dedicated broadcast person underneath them.”

Mac Allister’s late show sets unwanted record for United
Mac Allister was the calmest person inside the AMEX Stadium as the clock ticked into the ninth minute of added time.

The Argentinian has developed a reputation as one of the most consistent penalty takers in the Premier League this season, with tonight’s spot-kick his sixth successful effort of the campaign, as part of a 100% record.

Only Erling Haaland (7) has scored more from the Premier League penalty spot than Mac Allister in 2022/23, and his own personal tally set an unwanted benchmark for United.

As the visitors threw their bodies on the line to prevent a late Brighton winner, Mac Allister’s eventual breakthrough, clocked at 98:16, was the latest goal United have conceded in their Premier League history.

Are Brighton headed to Europe?
Brighton’s third Premier League win in four games gives the Seagulls a huge chance of sealing a first ever European qualification spot.

A place in the Europa League next season would be just reward for Roberto De Zerbi and his players, particularly on the back of Graham Potter’s early season departure, and subsequent disaster at Chelsea.

Home form will be key in Brighton maintaining their momentum, with an unbeaten run of five Premier League home games, ahead of facing relegation battling Everton and Southampton, plus Manchester City, at the AMEX this month.

“We have to be more clinical on our chances we produced in the first half. In the end we gave away a goal and that can’t happen. It was also a little unlucky because it was never a free kick from where the corner came from but then you can’t bounce back anymore and that is what we have to do on Sunday.

“We had the chances clear. Great opportunities, one has to be in.

“I don’t have concerns about United scoring goals. It is about keeping the focus. Don’t lose the focus, then we take that point. In the end if you can’t win it because you don’t finish the chances then don’t lose.

“It is handball, maybe he is out of balance or maybe got a push in the back. My anger is more about the free kick before the corner, it was never a free kick. There were so many bad tackles tonight.

“It is not about the officials, we have to finish the chances, be more clinical and don’t make the mistakes we did like in the last seconds.

“We have everything in our hands and we have to bounce back. We take the lessons from tonight and we have to move on.”
