Keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Here’s why FDOT and FHP are joining together to try and raise awareness about distracted driving and its dangers.
It’s something you see almost every day on the road: drivers eating, texting, and generally not paying full attention to the asphalt in front of them.
“We’ve seen an increase in distracted driving in recent years,” said FDOT Spokesman Troy Roberts. “In 2019 I think there were 3,100 deaths as a direct result of distracted driving, and that increased from the previous year.”
Florida Highway Patrol numbers show there were 50,000 in-state distracted driving accidents in 2020 — an increase of 33 percent since 2014.
“Out of those 50,000 distracted driving collisions there were almost 300 people killed and almost 2,700 seriously injured,” said FHP Spokesman Patrick Riordan. “So there’s no doubt it is a growing problem.”
A law allowing law enforcement to pull you over if you’re texting went into effect July 1st, 2019. Since then numbers show 6,746 citations were handed out with almost 1,500 of them in school zones in 2020 alone.
“It’s a second or two seconds,” said Roberts. “A lot of time 2 seconds doesn’t seem like a lot of time in the grand scheme of things but that’s the difference between a close call and a crash.”
Both FDOT and FHP say while younger generations do catch most of the blame for driving while on their phones studies actually show all age groups are guilty of the infraction. This is why OnMyWay dedicates every April to raising awareness on the issue.
