Portland Thorns’ Olivia Moultrie, 15, scored her first professional goal Wednesday in the Women’s International Champions Cup against the Houston Dash. Portland won 3-1 in penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie in regulation.
Moultrie was critical to the Thorns advancing, scoring via a free kick in the 58th minute to tie the game 2-2, and converting a penalty kick in the shootout to help Portland advance to the Cup championship Saturday. The Thorns will play Olympique Lyonnais, who beat Barcelona 3-2 on Wednesday.
Prior to Moultrie’s free kick, teammate Maddie Pogarch came up to her and asked if she was going to shoot.
“I was like, ‘hell yes I’m gonna shoot it,'” Moultrie said. “And then she was like, ‘OK, you freaking got this.'”
Moultrie became the youngest player in NWSL history when she made her debut for the Thorns on July 3. She had one assist in six appearances this season entering Wednesday. Moultrie signed a three-year deal with Portland following a successful battle against the league where she won the right to play.
The midfielder has trained with the Thorns since turning professional after signing a nine-year endorsement deal with Nike at the age of 13.
