Elton John Ends Farewell Tour with Powerful Performance of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”

Elton John performed what he says was the last show on the final tour of his career Saturday night.

The iconic, award-winning musician took the stage for purportedly the last time ever as a touring artist in Stockholm, Sweden, according to his website.

In the caption for a video posted to his official Instagram account Saturday, the British music legend wrote, “What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it. Tonight is the final night.”

The video includes a clip from a 2018 interview with Anderson Cooper in which the musician announced his retirement from touring. “It’s the last time that I will be touring and traveling the world,” John says in the clip.

The five-time Grammy winner’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour” kicked off in 2018 and was originally meant to end in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour has been publicized as his last after more than five decades on the road.

The tour featured more than 300 shows and was attended by more than 6 million fans across the world, according to John’s Instagram video. The 76-year-old musician headlined the Glastonbury Festival as his final U.K. stop on his farewell tour.

David Furnish, John’s husband, wrote on Instagram, “Finally off the road and into the sunset. So excited for the next chapter together.”

The pair have two sons together, Zachary and Elijah.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin joined John’s last show via livestream to pay tribute to the “Rocket Man” singer. He wished John a happy retirement.

“We’re so grateful for everything you’ve done for us, everything you’ve done for the AIDS Foundation,” Martin said. “Every time you’ve been kind to anybody, everything you’ve done for LGBTQ, everything you’ve done for fashion and eyewear. Everything you’ve done for sexiness, and love, and dressing gowns!”

The lyrics to “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” were penned by John’s writing partner, Bernie Taupin. The lyrics are meant to evoke a feeling of escapism – particularly Taupin’s need to escape a life of fame.

“I don’t believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn’t want it,” Taupin said in an interview with the BBC. “I just don’t believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal.”

John decided to name his farewell jaunt after the song, given its subject matter. He announced his farewell tour in September 2018. Since that time, the tour has pulled in an unprecedented amount of people. He surpassed Ed Sheeran’s The Divide Tour to become the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history, exceeding $800 million in total earnings.

“This is a very poignant evening because it’s the last show of the tour. This is the 330th, counting Glastonbury, we’ve done 330 shows in 663 days. That’s pretty amazing,” the “Tiny Dancer” singer said during Saturday’s performance.

In January 2022, shortly before he resumed the tour, John told “CBS Mornings” he was looking forward to spending time with his family when it was over.

“I mean, I’ve been touring since I was 17 in the back of a van. I’ve had the most incredible life. I’ve been so lucky, and I’ve loved every single minute of it,” he said at the time. “But I’ve had enough of that applause, and I really want I’ll be 76 years of age when I stop touring in 2023. I want to do something different with the rest of my life.”
