All five Marines aboard the doomed MV-22B Osprey were reported dead on Thursday, the military confirmed Thursday.
The military aircraft crashed during a training mission Wednesday afternoon in a Southern California desert, about 150 miles west of San Diego. An investigation is underway to determine why the aircraft went down in Glamis, California, a 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing spokesperson said.
“We mourn the loss of our Marines in this tragic mishap,” said Maj. Gen. Bradford J. Gering, commanding general of 3rd MAW. “Our hearts go out to their families ad friends as they cope with this tragedy.”
One of the Marines was identified as 21-year-old Illinois native Nathan Carlson, by his uncle Winnebago County Board member Keith McDonald, WTVO 17 reported.
The victims were part of Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, an aviation squadron based in San Diego, according to the statement. Their names were not released.
“As a matter of policy, identities of deceased service members are not released until 24-hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been completed,” the statement said.
The aircraft was based at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, officials said.
Military firefighters and the Imperial County Fire Department responded to the crash, which was reported at 12:25 p.m.
