A storm system crossing the Northeast Monday and Monday night will bring much-needed rainfall to the area along with the threat of severe thunderstorms. The main threats with this round of storms are heavy rain and damaging winds, but tornadoes are also possible, especially in New Hampshire.
The window for severe storms will be from mid-afternoon until about 10 p.m., but scattered showers and storms will likely continue into the night.
Rainfall rates up to 1 inch per hour are possible for a time and could lead to flash flooding. Ponding on roadways and poor drainage areas is likely.
A good, soaking rain is expected with 0.75 inches to 1 inch of rain along the coast, 1 to 1.5 inches in the foothills and 1.5 to 2 inches in the mountains. This will likely not be enough to improve drought conditions but should still be beneficial.
There may be more storms across parts of Maine on Tuesday, but they should not be as widespread or as strong. The big change for Tuesday will be temperatures soaring into the upper 80s in parts of Maine, and higher humidity.
