The Philadelphia Phillies tied a World Series record with five home runs in a 7-0 Game 3 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. And superstar Bryce Harper dished out the initial punishment and, apparently, some crucial advice.
Harper’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning kicked off a record-setting five-homer blitz off McCullers as the Phillies prevailed 7-0 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 World Series lead.
Philadelphia became the first team to hit five home runs in the first five innings of a World Series game in the event’s 118 years. The longball provided all seven of the Phillies’ runs, and they won their sixth game without a loss this postseason at Citizens Bank Park.
“It’s tough to play here. I can’t imagine what it’s like for the Astros,” Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos said.
“They just have zero breathing room,” he said. “And that’s a good thing.”
The Phillies are 22-9 all-time at the Bank in the postseason since hosting their first playoff game there in 2007.
“The fan base, I mean, it’s just so much fun. They showed up tonight knowing that we needed ’em, and they continue to do that,” Harper said.
Alec Bohm hit the 1,000th home run in World Series history Tuesday night, and the Phillies quickly went to work on launching the next thousand.
Cristian Javier pitches next for the Astros in Game 4 on Wednesday night. He won his last start, holding the New York Yankees to one hit in 5 1/3 shutout innings in the Bronx during the AL Championship Series.
Aaron Nola starts for the Phillies. One of their aces, he was done after giving up five runs in 4 1/3 innings in the World Series opener.
The right-hander Lance McCullers Jr., the Astros’ starter, became the first pitcher to surrender five home runs in a World Series game,”I don’t really get hit around like that, so I was a little bit in disbelief,” he said,
And the Phillies became the fourth team to hit five in a World Series game. They joined the 2017 Astros, the 1989 Athletics and the 1928 Yankees, all of whom went on to win the World Series.
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE
Philly sports champions Mike Schmidt, Julius Erving, Brandon Graham and Bernie Parent threw first pitches to 2008 World Series champions Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino. Country music star Tim McGraw, son of the late Phillies reliever Tug McGraw, received a huge ovation and wore his dad’s No. 45 McGraw jersey. McGraw closed the 1980 World Series with a strikeout.
