Over here in Las Vegas, AMD officially lifted its veil of secrecy over its long-awaited GPU follow-up, the Radeon RX 7000 series. As promised by Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, during the brand’s Ryzen 7000 series launch back in August, these new graphics cards are based on its brand new RDNA3 architecture and as a start, the cards that are launching are the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT.
We’ll start with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, a card with a moniker at the end that frankly, we’ve not heard since the era of the Radeon 1900 XTX. Now, it goes without saying that this card is AMD’s top-tier graphics card which comes with 24GB of GDDR6 running on a 384-bit memory bus, and is approximately 1.6x faster than its predecessor. Other specifications include 96 CUs, a 2.3GHz game clock, and a 355W TDP.
AMD gave a preview of FSR 3 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 3), the latest version of the company’s upscaling tech. AMD is claiming it’ll provide 2x increase in frame rate over FSR 2, boosted by the new AMD Fluid Motion Frames technology. This frame generation looks similar to what Nvidia is doing with DLSS 3.
As an example, they showed an example in Unreal Engine 5 getting 60 fps in 4K using FSR 2. With FSR 3 enabled, that frame rate jumped to 112 fps. FSR 3 will be coming to supported titles in 2023.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX has 24 GB of GDDR6 memory, 350 watts of board power, 96 unified RDNA 3 cores, a 2.3 GHz music box and is said to be up to 1.7 times faster than AMD’s previous flagship, the Radeon RX 6950 XT playing in 4K resolution. In comparison, the Radeon RX 7900 XT has 84 unified RDNA 3 compute units, a 2GHz music box, and 20GB of GDDR6 memory.
Pricing and Availability
The AMD RX 7900 XTX is priced at $999 while the RX 7900XT will cost $899. The graphics cards should be available starting December 13, 2022, from AMD.com and from prominent board partners including ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, and ASRock.
The new Radeon RX 7000 series is a welcome upgrade from the last iteration. There’s no doubt the Radeon RX will compete against the likes of NVIDIA RTX 4090 and 4080. But will they be able to match their impressive performance? What do you think?
