The 95th Oscars served as the stage for several musical performances, but one may have surprised some viewers as acting nominee Stephanie Hsu took to the spotlight alongside David Byrne for Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Best Song number, “This Is a Life.”
The duo joined the band Son Lux on stage for the mesmerizing number which saw Hsu don a white gown similar to her onscreen counterpart’s iconic look. Byrne, meanwhile, got into the Everything Everywhere All at Once mood with some on-brand hot dog fingers.
But the best part of the performance was seeing Byrne show, halfway through the song, that he was sporting “hot dog fingers,” a signature gag from the film. The long, wiggly sausage-like hands brought the internet and the house down.
Byrne was also wearing a white suit to match his silver fox white hair and performed onstage with herky-jerky dance moves that may remind fans of his Stop Making Sense concert film. The whole thing was rather avant-garde, which fans perhaps have come to expect from Byrne shows. There were also myriad googley eyes as part of the performance, which were also part of the movie.
Byrne sang the song from the movie with Hsu and Son Lux, which perfumed on a drum kit, bass and guitar. With them, a multi-verse of dancers jumped, slid and moved as they also performed a few martial arts, a fighting style featured in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Despite Hsu not being on the original track, she’s no stranger to musical performance as she got her start in theatre, graduating from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2012. She also trained with the Atlantic Theater Company and appeared in productions of Be More Chill and The SpongeBob Musical among other shows.
Acclaimed indie rock singer-songwriter Mitski co-performed the original “This Is a Life” with Talking Heads frontman Byrne, but was not present for the performance. Hsu, who pulled double acting duty in Everyone Everywhere All at Once as daughter Joy Wong and villain Jobu Tapaki, filled in for Mitski for the brief “Life” rendition.
David Byrne is a prior Oscar winner, having co-composed the score for 1988 best picture winner The Last Emperor along with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su. Hsu was nominated for best supporting actress at this year’s awards, but lost to Jamie Lee Curtis for her performance in the same movie. Everyone Everywhere All at Once is the most-nominated movie on the evening, with 11 total nods, including for best picture.
“This Is a Life” faces stiff competition in the best original song category from the starry likes of Lady Gaga (for Top Gun: Maverick) and Rihanna (for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), as well as frequent nominee Dianne Warren.
