The third time was the charm for Larissa Pacheco at 2022 PFL Championships as she upset Kayla Harrison to claim gold on Friday.
On Friday night, Pacheco shocked Kayla Harrison by picking up a unanimous decision victory in the main event of the PFL World Championship. The promotion’s first pay-per-view event took place at the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
Harrison now suffers the first loss in her professional MMA career and Pacheco avenges two previous losses — the second of which came when the two of them met for the inaugural division championship in 2019.
The fight was back-and-forth throughout the five round battle, but in the end, Pacheco was able to exact some revenge after dropping two bouts to Harrison in 2019.
MMA Twitter Reacts
MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck and Jed Meshew react to the massive upset championship win for Pacheco, discuss where Harrison goes following her first professional loss, the chances the PFL runs the matchup back for a fourth time — possibly on their next pay-per-view fight card — how Dana White and Scott Coker may react to the result, other championship winners, including Brendan Loughnane and Olivier Aubin-Mercier, Marlon Moraes getting stopped for the fifth consecutive time, and more.
The MMA community certainly had some thoughts about Kayla Harrison losing for the first time in the PFL 10 main event. While there may have been apprehension about paying the $50 price tag for the promotion’s first ever pay-per-view event, it was clear from the reactions on social media that the Olympian has a ton of buzz around her, and this upset left the community stunned.
“Larissa Pacheco just defeated Kayla Harrison via unanimous decision. That is the upset of the year. Kayla Harrison has suffered her first defeat in MMA. She’s no longer undefeated. Incredible scenes,” Chamatkar Sandhu wrote on Twitter.
Harrison’s loss is the latest in a long list of upsets this year in MMA. This might keep her away from Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes’ type of conversations now.
Congratulations are in order for Larissa Pacheco, after scoring a $1 million dollar prize, and beating Kayla Harrison in what she has said will be her final tournament run. It is going to be fascinating to see what is next for both ladies and whether or not a fourth will take place.
