Before the altercation between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole, the biggest issue the Golden State Warriors faced was apparently the fight for the team’s last roster spot. And while this particular story is significantly less juicy than the slap that resonated across the Bay (and the NBA), it’s not without controversy.
Last week, the Warriors opted to part ways with energetic guard Mac McClung. It was a surprising move from the impression he made on the pitch – in Pre-game lay-up line as well as games – during the summer league as well as the team’s opening games in preseason in Japan.
The cheering section of McClung’s Dub Nation didn’t have to wait long for the fiery baller to land on his feet, however, as he seems poised to pen another NBA deal (and with another title contender, no less).
According to a report by The Athletic’s Rich Hofman McClung is scheduled to sign Exhibit 10 with the Philadelphia 76ers.
As an Exhibit 10 signee who is joining Philadelphia in the later stages of training camp, McClung’s ultimate target is likely to be the club’s G-League affiliates, the Delaware Blue Coats. Still, the 23-year-old displayed legitimate NBA chops during his brief stint with the dubs.
In his first action with the club during the California Classic, McClung scored 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting. A week later in Las Vegas, he dropped a 22-piece while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals against the Miami Heat’s summer league roster.
During Golden State’s second preseason game against the Washington Wizards, he struck again, scoring nine points on 4-of-6 shooting as team-best while adding two boards, two assists and two steals during a fourth-quarter blast that to led a comeback victory over the DC crew.
Ultimately, however, his playing ability took precedence over his actual performance in the dubs’ decision-making process.
The Warriors opted to part ways with McClung to make up a spot for point guard Ty Jerome, who had become available after he was fired by the Houston Rockets. However, it wasn’t an easy decision for head coach Steve Kerr and the rest of the team.
“I think we were interested in a pass-first-point guard,” Kerr said of the move. “Letting Mac go was hard. I love Mac and I think he’s an NBA player.”
Unfortunately, the 6-foot-5 Jerome was considered better for the team in its composition. As well as having more NBA experience, Jerome has some obvious physical advantages over the comparatively small McClung.
“We needed more of a pass-first guy for our squad. And Ty is a very fascinating player because of his size and his ability to see over the top of defense, his pick and roll game,” added Kerr. “So it’s a great opportunity for us to take a look at him and play with our boys.”
