Ghostface is back for another slasher in the first trailer for Scream 6. The trailer to the sequel to 2022’s Scream dropped Wednesday, after several months of social media teasing, and gave fans their first look at the latest entry in the (mostly) excellent horror series. Scream 6 is set for release on March 10, 2023.
The trailer only offers a brief tease of what is to come in the horror sequel but it will be set in New York City and follows Sam and Tara who were introduced in the 2022 reboot/sequel Scream.
Played by Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, the sisters have left Woodsboro to escape the murderous legacy of Ghostface but the iconic horror villain returns once more.
Scream 6 will bring back cast members from the previous entry in the series, including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Devyn Nekoda, as well as Hayden Panettiere, and Courteney Cox returning from previous movies in the series. This is the second entry in the franchise that won’t involve horror legend Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Taking over for Craven on the previous entry was the horror team behind Ready or Not, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, part of Radio Silence with this movie’s executive producer, Chad Villella.
Courtney Cox is the only cast member from the original film who will be reprising their role in this installment after Neve Campbell was unhappy with her offer for the sequel.
In a statement, Campbell said: “I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years.
And as a woman in this business, I think it’s really important for us to be valued and to fight to be valued.”
Scream VI will be the first film in the series not to feature Campbell. Her role as Sidney Prescott in the original 1996 film made her a global star and she became one of the horror genre’s most loved leading ladies.
Hayden Panettiere, who starred in Scream IV, is also making her second appearance in the franchise as she reprises her role as Kirby Reed though her voice was heard in last year’s Scream.
New additions to the cast include Samara Weaving, Mission: Impossible star Henry Czerny and Tony Revolori from The Grand Budapest Hotel.
