  • Placed OF Kole Calhoun on the 10-day injured list (strained left hamstring).
  • Recalled INF Jake Hager from Triple-A Reno.
  1. Arizona Diamondbacks: 35-80
  2. Baltimore Orioles: 38-74
  3. Texas Rangers: 40-74
  4. Pittsburgh Pirates: 41-73
  5. Miami Marlins: 48-67
  • Kole Calhoun will go on IL today as expected. This injury is in a different spot, different muscle than his previous injury that required surgery. It will be a matter of weeks, not days for his return, but Torey would not offer a timeline other than to suggest we compare to others with similar injuries. Last night in the post game interviews Kole said he was “feeling awesome until that moment” and had no signs or symptoms of any issues prior to then.
  • As of this writing, the corresponding move and today’s lineup had not yet been announced as they were still going through protocols before they could activate whoever is being called up. That will happen about 30 seconds after I hit send to Jim. 😉 [Jim: see above!]
  • Replacing Kole in RF: I asked if we should expect to see more of Pavin Smith or Josh Rojas in RF in Kole’s absence. Torey said that he wants to see Rojas more in the middle of the diamond, and we should expect to see more of Pavin over Josh in RF.
  • Tyler Gilbert will get the start on Saturday. Torey would neither commit to it being a “bullpen game”, or for Gilbert to go 5 or 6 innings, simply stating Gilbert is “fairly stretched out”. In his last start in Reno on July 29th he went 6 innings, and threw 91 pitches. Since being called up he has worked in 3 games, and threw 19, 19 & 32 pitches most recently on August 7th.
  • Josh Rojas and head first slides: An interesting question was asked by Evan Thompson. What discussions have the coaches had with players, and Josh in particular, when he is trying to advance an extra base on a hit, (as opposed to stealing). Torey acknowledged those are instinctual cases, and while they try to get the players to slide feet first, in those cases the athlete also needs to do what comes naturally. However they players are instructed NEVER to slide head first into first base or home plate. That segment of the recording a good listen. about 4:40 into the recording.
  • Dave McKay is with the team today for pre-game and practice but is still not cleared by his doctors to be on the field in uniform during games. “He’s here today, he’s the Godfather. He walks in, you stop, you put down your pencil and you have a conversation with him , and you fill up your empty vessel. the best that you can “ McKay has his eye on the next road trip, but it will be up to his team of doctors to clear that.
  • Luke Weaver will make a rehab start in Reno on Saturday, and target pitch range is 55-60.
