The Portland Timbers are trading forward Jeremy Ebobisse to the San Jose Earthquakes for $1.167 million in general allocation money, according to a source with direct knowledge of the deal.
That money will be split over two years, with the Timbers receiving $667,000 in GAM in 2022 and another $500,000 in 2023. In addition, Portland retains a 15 percent sell-on clause on Ebobisse for anything over the initial $1.167 million San Jose paid for him. Ebobisse is also expected to sign a new contract with the Earthquakes, sources said.
Ebobisse was not in uniform on Wednesday night as the Timbers took on the Earthquakes. The Washington Post first reported the trade.
The move will give Ebobisse a chance to feature as a No. 9 for San Jose, the position where he would have the best chance to break in with the U.S. men’s national team. He is currently behind two strikers on the depth chart in Portland — Felipe Mora and soon-to-return designated player Jaroslaw Niezgoda — and has been playing mostly on the wing for the Timbers.
The trade is a prime example of the impact of the MLS salary cap staying flat from 2021 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
When MLS and the Players Association negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement in 2021 after the league threatened a lockout, it included a decision to delay salary cap increases for one year. That has put several teams in more of a cap crunch due to increases that had been built into contracts.
