Star Wars: Eclipse is a High Republic game by the makers of Heavy Rain!– OnMyWay Mobile App User News

The Game Awards 2021 didn’t have quite as many surprises as might have been hoped, but one that mostly counts is Star Wars: Eclipse by Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream.

The name and setting leaked last month but there weren’t any details beyond that, with talk of it being more action oriented than Quantic’s normal narrative-based titles.

To be honest, it’s still not clear what Eclipse is but it sure does look pretty, rivalling Hellblade 2 for the best-looking game of the show. Although it wasn’t clear if any of the footage was in-game, so maybe it shouldn’t count just yet.

The official marketing blurb from Lucasfilm Games describes Eclipse as an ‘intricately branching action adventure game that can be experienced in many ways, and puts the destinies of multiple playable characters in your hands’, which does sound very similar to Quantic’s previous games.

What’s going on in terms of the story is definitely a mystery, although the official Star Wars site offers a few clues, talking about the villainous Nihil and ‘the horror of the Drengir’. These are apparently bad guys from High Republic novels and comics, but the implication seems to be that they’re involved in the game too.

The High Republic era is set around 200 years before the prequels (and 800 years after The Old Republic) so the only movie character alive at the time is Yoda, who you can see briefly in the trailer.

The trailer also features Trade Federation battleships from the prequels, but we don’t recognise the fighters that are attacking them – but then we haven’t read any of the High Republic novels or comics, so perhaps they’re in that.

Visually, it all looks very impressive but given Quantic’s dubious storytelling abilities our expectations remain tempered. Although you could argue a nonsensical story and bad dialogue is fully in keeping with modern Star Wars movies…

Either way, the game is apparently only in ‘early development’, so there’s no release date and no expectation that it will be out next year.
