Microblogging site Twitter has been plunged into turmoil as the new chief of the company, Elon Musk started laying off wide swaths of the company’s workforce, infuriating staff and rattling the tech industry. The microblogging site sacked 50% of its employees yesterday.
The mass layoffs were documented on the Twitter website itself, where many employees appeared to rally together under the #OneTeam hashtag, a blue heart, and salute emojis. Employees found themselves abruptly locked out of their email accounts.
The move follows an uncertainty about the company’s future under new owner Elon Musk, who tweeted that the service was experiencing a “massive drop in revenue” as advertisers pulled spending. Musk has sought to slash costs and impose a demanding new work ethic. Livemint is closely following the events as they unfold. Stay tuned for live updates
