Evacuations have been ordered for two communities in the path of a fast-moving fire that broke out in Parleys Canyon.
The fire started on the south side of eastbound Interstate 80 between mile markers 137 and 138 Saturday afternoon. The flames were seen burning right off the roadway in some places.
Officially named the Parleys Canyon Fire, the fire started in Salt Lake County near the Summit County border.
The blaze was moving fast to the south and east, towards the Summit Park and Pinebrook neighborhoods.
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for both. Firefighters and rescue crews were working to help residents leave the area.
The exact number of homes in the two communities was not available, though officials said around 2,000 structures and powerlines were threatened.
Lambs Canyon was also being evacuated.
Large flames were visible from the roadway as the fire moved up the mountain and away from the road.
Eastbound traffic on I-80 was moving very slowly through the fire area as crews worked to control the blaze.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers closed the right eastbound lane and were conducting traffic control through the area.
Westbound traffic remained open.
Officials said the fire was moving up the mountain, rather than toward the highway.
Multiple ground and air resources were deployed to assist in firefighting efforts. State fire officials said there were about 15 air tankers and helicopters conducting an air attack.
Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez has asked people to avoid the area to avoid hampering crews from working and residents from leaving the area.
The fire was estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 acres.
