After a fast-moving storm brought a tornado warning to Centre County on Monday afternoon, a tornado watch that had been in effect was lifted by 5 p.m. The watch had been in effect through 9 p.m. and remained in effect in Williamsport, Lancaster and other points east. Centre County was not under any weather advisories as of 5:15 p.m. The National Weather Service issued the tornado warning at about 2 p.m. and advised people to take shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. It was in effect through 2:30 p.m. and brought heavy rain, strong winds and hail to parts of Centre County.
Tornado Watch in effect 1:20 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., per National Weather Service.
National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch from 1:20 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, for counties and cities throughout Virginia including Augusta County and Staunton and Waynesboro.
Virginia counties include Albemarle, Amelia, Arlington, Amelia, Caroline, Chesterfield, Clarke, Culpeper, Cumberland, Essex, Fairfax, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Green, Hanover, Henrico, Highland, Kind, William, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Nottoway, Orange, Page, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince William, Rappahannock, Richmond, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Warren and Westmoreland.
A tornado watch means a tornado is possible in or near the area. A watch generally covers a large area, likely multiple counties or even states, the weather service said. This is the time to be prepared and “review and discuss your emergency plans and check supplies and your safe room,” the NWS said.
New Jersey normally gets an average of two tornadoes each year, but last year the state was rocked by an unusually high number — with 13 confirmed twisters touching down.
The National Weather Service in State College addressed a handful of tornado-related myths in a Facebook post Monday. Contrary to popular belief, tornadoes can occur in mountains and cities, they can cross lakes and rivers, and residents should not open windows if a tornado is on the way, the post said.
Many of our viewers sent in photos of shelf clouds (the long ominous cloud that precedes the brunt of the storm) that featured a bluish/green tint, a clear indication of large hailstones lofted within the storms.
