The House Jan. 6 committee wrapped up its ninth hearing about its Capitol insurrection investigation. At the hearing’s end, panel members unanimously voted to subpoena former President Donald Trump to testify.
Trump is not likely to cooperate with the committee’s demand to provide documents and testimony under oath and in a posting on his Truth Social network dismissed the committee as “a laughing stock”.
On Thursday, the panel showed previously unreleased video of House and Senate leaders in safe rooms at the Capitol asking for assistance from governors, Vice President Mike Pence, the Maryland National Guard and the Department of Defense to stop the violence.
In one video, an aide told Nancy Pelosi that House members trapped on the chamber floor were putting on tear gas masks. Pelosi looked to Representative Jim Clyburn and asked: “Can you believe it?”
Trump isn’t the first former president to be subpoenaed by Congress, NBC News notes: “Several sitting and former presidents and vice presidents have also testified before congressional committees, including Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and Gerald R. Ford.”
“We have sufficient information to consider criminal referrals for multiple individuals, and to recommend a range of legislative proposals to guard against another Jan. 6th, but a key task remains,” Vice Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said Thursday. “We must seek the testimony under oath of Jan. 6th’s central player.”
