The winning kick was set up by DSU cornerback Charles Peeler’s interception on South Carolina State’s first offensive play in overtime.
It marked DSU’s first win at S.C. State since 2007 and improved the Hornets’ record to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the MEAC. The Bulldogs dropped their second straight game to fall to 3-6 and 1-2. The game was broadcast on ESPN3.
After four consecutive running plays in overtime got DSU to the S.C. State one-yard line, head coach Rod Milstead sent in Wilson for the game-winner.
Delaware State moved into sole possession of third place in the conference, trailing only North Carolina Central (3-1) and Howard (2-1), which happen to account for DSU’s two losses.
Delaware State led 24-17 after tight end Myles Morales caught a 1-yard “pop pass” touchdown after a direct snap to running back Wade Inge.
South Carolina State tied the game on a touchdown pass in the final minute of the fourth quarter.
The Hornets scored first on a two-yard touchdown run by Thomas Bertrand-Hudson. They later widened the lead to 24-14 after a 25-yard TD run by Milford, Delaware’s Marquis Gillis, who now has 6 rushing TDs on the season.
DSU’s wraps up the season with home games against MEAC rival Morgan State on Nov. 12 and Campbell University of the Big South Conference on Nov. 19. Both are 2:02 p.m. kickoffs at Alumni Stadium.
