Dingers. Moonshots. Longballs. Big flies. Taters. Whatever you call ’em, these guys are gonna deliver ’em.
After a year away, the Home Run Derby is back Monday night, and there’s a good chance it’s going to be one for the ages: The thin Denver air is going to allow for some zaftig home run numbers.
The field, too, will be up to the task: Shohei Ohtani, Joey Gallo and 2019 dinger contest champ Pete Alonso headline this year’s event, with many expecting Ohtani to end up in the final.
There are, of course, some sleeper candidates: Hometown player Trevor Story has an opportunity to play to the field he’s familiar with in his first-round matchup with Gallo, while Athletics first baseman Matt Olson has an opportunity to make a run to the finals, as well.
Expect mile-high flies in the Mile High City. Here’s how the field matches up in the 2021 Home Run Derby.
Home Run Derby bracket 2021
There are more than a few marquee matchups for this year’s event.
Left side:
- Angels’ Shohei Ohtani (1) vs. Nationals’ Juan Soto (8)
- Royals’ Salvador Perez (4) vs. Mets’ Pete Alonso (5)
Right side:
- Rangers’ Joey Gallo (2) vs. Rockies’ Trevor Story (7)
- Athletics’ Matt Olson (3) vs. Orioles’ Trey Mancini (6)
Home Run Derby predictions
Joe Rivera (@JoeRiveraSN): It’s Sho Time? Not quite. There’s a reason they’re the top two seeds, and Joey Gallo will upend Shohei Ohtani in the final in one of the better Home Run Derbies in recent memory. Winner: Gallo
Jacob Camenker (@JacobCamenker): Joey Gallo will cruise through his side of the bracket while Shohei Ohtani vs. Pete Alonso will turn out to be an epic showdown for the right to play in the final. The reigning derby-winner Alonso emerges but wears down in the final round against the Rangers slugger. Winner: Gallo
Jason Foster (@ByJasonFoster): This thing is gonna give us exactly what we wanted — repeated, monster dingers — and it’s gonna end exactly how we expected — with Shohei Ohtani claiming the crown and further establishing himself as a baseball super-mutant and possible extraterrestrial. Look for at least one 500-plus-foot homer from him in that thin Denver air. Winner: Ohtani
Ryan Fagan (@RyanFagan): Joey Gallo has such raw, easy power that he could probably win this Derby — even with so many great sluggers in Denver — without going max effort. Winner: Gallo
