The celebration of the 30th anniversary of the animated classic “Beauty and the Beast”, which aired on ABC on Thursday night, had a complicated — and at times confusing — order: it was a live show, it was a dance performance, and it was a look back at the creation film, with parts of the original film strategically used to close gaps in the story. Is the network biting off more than it should? The tale is as old as the world, one might say.
Luckily, the artists at the center of the live performances and dance routines brought the show to life in such a way that castle-worthy magic hit the stage in a spectacular performance that more than adequately honored the beloved 1991 film.
The show’s lively elements – especially the artful dance routines, such as the one in which the performers imitated the movements of the petals falling from an enchanted rose, and the iconic musical numbers, such as “Be Our Guest” – could easily stand apart, and if you were in any moment wish they were able, you are not alone.
Perhaps this was evidence that the casting—David Alan Grier as the rather salty Cogsworth, Martin Short as Lumière, Shania Twain as the ringing Mrs. Potts—could have left something to be desired, especially given the random nature of the film. the live performances that preceded it.
But most of the credit goes to HER, Josh Groban and the outstanding Joshua Henry as Belle, the Beast and Gaston respectively.
The male protagonists held their moments without surprising anyone. Groban stood out most for his performance of “If I Can’t Love Her” from the film’s stage version, and Henry demonstrated his powerful vocal power in “The Mob Song” in a way that makes you wish someone was that smart. how to cast it in the 2017 movie.
But it was SHE who broke the tradition with guitar shredding moment at the end of the show, it brought viewers the risk this show needed to step out of the mighty animated shadow and bring Belle into 2022 in a way we deserve more.
If that’s what Disney is leaning on for its upcoming iterations of The Princess, be our guest.
