Friday’s Nebraska-Rutgers game will mark Matt Davison’s last call in the radio booth, he announced just prior to kickoff on the Huskers Radio Network.
Davison made public the news with Huskers athletics director Trev Alberts also in the booth saluting him for his time broadcasting and also as a senior member of the Nebraska athletics department.
The former Husker wide receiver Davison is taking over a new venture with the 1890 NIL initiative, which was formally launched earlier this week as a new name, image and likeness collective for Nebraska student-athletes. Davison, who has most recently been Nebraska’s Senior Associate Athletic Director with a focus on the Go Big Project facility that will open next year, will serve as president of the new collective operation.
When it comes to his radio work, Davison has been associated with the Husker broadcast in one way or another for 19 years, most recently as the analyst next to play-by-play voice Greg Sharpe. He also spent many years as a radio analyst for Husker hoops.
“It’s been a great honor for me to be able to do this for so long,” Davison said during the radio broadcast.
In taking over the new assignment with 1890, he said it’s something he needs to put everything into.
“I’m going to continue to do what I’ve done for most of my life which is to try to give back to this program best I can,” Davison said.
Husker interim coach Mickey Joseph said this week he expects Davison to excel with that assignment.
“Matt’s been good for the University of Nebraska,” said Husker interim coach Mickey Joseph after Wednesday’s practice. “One thing he knows how to do is raise money — you can see the building outside. Matt understands recruiting and he’s going to be great for NIL because we have such a good support system with our fans and our backers. He’s going to do a great job.”
Upon making the announcement, Davison was hoping the radio call would come with a win.
“And who knows?” he said good-naturedly. “I could do a game again someday.”
