The Saints made history in their 9-0 road victory over the Buccaneers on “Sunday Night Football.”
New Orleans executed the franchise’s first shutout win since defeating Tampa Bay 41-0 on Dec. 16, 2012. Neither team scored a touchdown Sunday, but the Saints’ defense consistently prevented the Bucs from getting scoring opportunities.
Defensive end Cameron Jordan recorded two of the Saints’ four sacks of Tom Brady, including his 100th career sack in the second quarter. Defensive end Marcus Davenport also recorded a sack and pushed the Buccaneers out of field goal range in the final seconds of the first half. Marshon Lattimore recovered a Brady fumble, which the Saints capitalized on with a field goal early in the third quarter.
The Buccaneers also suffered critical blows to their offense. Wide receivers Mike Evans (hamstring) and Chris Godwin (knee) left the game with injuries. Leading running back Leonard Fournette also couldn’t make a return after suffering a hamstring injury in the third quarter. Feeling pressure from the New Orleans defense and with his top skill players on the bench, Brady struggled to connect throughout the second half.
The loss marks just Brady’s third shutout defeat as a starter and his first since 2006.
Despite the loss, the Buccaneers (10-4) remain well atop the NFC South. They’re scheduled to face the Panthers next weekend before playing the Jets on the road in Week 17. The Saints (7-7) will continue their battle for a wild card spot in Week 16; they’re scheduled to face the Dolphins in a “Monday Night Fooball” matchup Dec. 27.
