“GMA” debuts the trailer for the sequel to “Avatar,” the highest-grossing film of all time, which will be on the big screen this December.
James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has a runtime befitting the 13-year wait for the sequel: around three hours and 10 minutes, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Avatar 2 hopes to join an elite club of longer Hollywood tentpoles that have done blockbuster business in theaters, including Avengers: Endgame (three hours and 2 minutes) and Cameron’s Titanic (three hours and 14 minutes). The two films rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, on Comscore’s list of the top-grossing movies of all time at the worldwide box office, not adjusted for inflation.
The trailer barely expands on this. If you are paying attention, you can spot that Jake’s daughter Kiri (played, astonishingly, by septuagenarian screen legend Sigourney Weaver) gets a good deal of focus, and that there’s some kind of teen-romance subplot, as well as some tension between different Na’vi clans and some war-with-humans stuff.
Despite running a full two-and-a-half minutes, the Avatar: The Way of Water trailer is even more stripped back than most early teasers — and it runs strongly against the grain of modern blockbuster marketing, which loves to build out plot and motivation, preview narrative and comedy beats, and drop lore Easter eggs for fans to pore over.
Pandora’s Beauty Is Avatar’s True Selling Point
Avatar’s groundbreaking visual effects, especially the 3D aspect of the movie, help explain why the James Cameron film is still the highest-grossing movie of all time. In terms of the story, there was nothing in Avatar that audiences had not already seen in several other movies. In fact, the Avatar 2 trailer suggests that The Way of Water will cover much of the same ground again as it is about protecting Pandora from invaders. Still, there was no other movie at that time that could compare to Avatar in terms of visuals, meaning that watching Avatar in theaters was a unique experience that no other release was offering. If Avatar’s plot is often deemed as forgettable, the same cannot be said about Avatar’s visual experience.

Avatar 2 Update Proves The Sequel Will Be Worth The Wait
‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has been one of the most anticipated films of the year after multiple delays and a recent update proves that it will all be worth the wait. Titanic director James Cameron is no stranger to movies with stunning water visuals. Avatar 2 will be releasing an unusually long time after its predecessor, but the lengthy development is a good thing, judging by Titanic and the first Avatar. Way of Water once again centers on Worthington’s Sully and Saldaña’s Na’vi character, Neytiri. It picks up a decade after the original and follows their family, with additional stars, including franchise newcomers Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet.
Avatar: The Way of Water opens in North America on Dec. 16, timed to its global rollout.
