Frank Ocean’s Coachella Preparation: Hockey Players Describe When ‘The Wheels Started to Fall Off’

Frank Ocean dropped out of his headlining slot for the second weekend of the festival “due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg,” his representatives announced Wednesday, and now Blink-182 and a mystery act are set to replace him. The pop-punk band performed to a massive crowd last Friday during the first weekend of the Indio, Calif. music festival. Now, they are set to take the main stage on Sunday after Bjork and followed by another act that was listed as “TBA” on the new lineup that was tweeted out by the fest on Thursday.

Ocean’s performance was met with disappointment, particularly from fans who attended the festival to see him perform. In one TikTok with more than 1 million likes, a fan who saw Ocean’s performance said some fans felt “scammed” because Ocean was late and difficult to see while onstage. In another video liked nearly 700,000 times, a fan said Ocean was “not bringing much to the whole performance,” which fell short of the high expectations fans had, and claimed they and many others left early. The fan noted the performance was especially disappointing for those who traveled long distances just to see Ocean. Some reviews of Ocean’s performance were critical: Variety called Ocean’s set a “disappointing mess,” citing low energy, “bizarre” pacing and the late start. The Guardian considered his set “a rollercoaster ending in disappointment” and gave his performance three out of five stars, praising his vocals but criticizing “moments of confusion” like his lip-syncing and the “inner child” performance.

Some fans and publications defended Ocean’s performance as fitting with his elusive image, with some noting the performance may have been difficult and personal as he dedicated it to his late brother. The Los Angeles Times praised Ocean’s singing as “magnificent” and noted his set was “willfully enigmatic” and reaffirmed his “talents as a vocalist and a teller of complicated stories.” GQ wrote Ocean’s performance was “special” and a “form of mourning,” speculating this informed Ocean’s choices including the last-minute redesign. “Why fans of the elusive musician’s insular music would necessarily expect him to put on a rollicking show raises a lot of different concerns here, but the show he did put on—frenzied, messy, full of grief—had so many moments of ecstasy,” the GQ review states. Justin Bieber said he was “blown away” by Ocean’s performance in an Instagram post on Tuesday, praising his artistry and his voice, adding he was “deeply moved.”

Despite some of the criticisms, Ocean did give an update on his next album since 2016’s Blonde – although the nature of his announcement won’t be music to everyone’s ears.

Speaking five songs into his set, Ocean told fans at the show: “I want to talk about why I’m here because it’s not about a new album,” he said, pausing, before adding, “not that there’s not a new album just not right now.”

Despite seven years of waiting, therefore, fans will have to wait just that bit longer.

As reported by Variety, Ocean will be replaced by Blink-182 – a message that was confirmed by the band’s Tom DeLonge, who wrote on his Instagram, “See you Sunday night”.

The California rockers played a surprise set during the opening weekend of Coachella, in a set replete with classics, and which marked the first live show that DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker have played together since 2014.

That was when Dan said they began to get word that Ocean had allegedly been in an accident that resulted in an ankle injury, with rumblings that the elusive singer was “‘not in a good head space’ and they ‘don’t know what’s going on.’ And we’re sitting there, and it is becoming clear that things are not going well with this show.” The pair described getting a call from their handler saying the ice was being deconstructed and the show was being reconfigured at the 11th hour.

“Those figure skaters got cut not because there was an ice issue, not because there was something wrong,” Dan said. “There was no malfunction. He Ocean just straight-up was like, ‘ this. I’m not doing this anymore.’ And to these 120 people he had bused out here, he was just like, ‘You guys aren’t doing s–t now.’ So it was just like a wild flip.”

Dan said he was confused and thought, “‘these Olympians just got cut from this Coachella performance with Frank Ocean and they think that we’re gonna go on? You’re saying goodbye to these skaters, but a bunch of dips–t former hockey players are gonna go up on that stage and buzz around?’” He added that at that point the remaining performers were handed sequined Prada suits and told they were to “walk back and forth on stage for about five minutes,” but not skate.
