“Tokyo Pop,” set in Japan, was a personal story for Kuzui, who is married to a Japanese film producer. The film tells the tale of Wendy, a backup singer from New York who travels to Japan during the height of American culture’s popularity. Overcoming the language barrier, she finds support from Hiro, a frustrated rock musician. They navigate a relationship and Wendy eventually joins his band. Hamilton, the lead actress, even wrote and performed the closing-credits song.
