Arnold Schwarzenegger shows support for Bruce Willis

“I think that he’s fantastic,” Schwarzenegger said in an interview with CinemaBlend. “He was, always for years and years, is a huge, huge star. And I think that he will always be remembered as a great, great star. And a kind man. I understand that under his circumstances, health-wise, that he had to retire. But in general, you know, we never really retire. Action heroes, they reload.”

Last year, Willis’ daughter Rumer announced via Instagram that her father had been diagnosed with aphasia, which affects language abilities, and was “stepping away” from his career.

“We wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” she wrote. “As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”

Schwarzenegger has long been an admirer of Willis. In the new book The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage, author Nick de Semlyen recounts how the Austrian actor “guffawed through a screening of the movie at Fox, not least at the moment when McClane exclaims, ‘They have missiles, automatic weapons, and enough plastic explosives to orbit Arnold Schwarzenegger!'”

How many children does Bruce Willis have?
Bruce Willis is the proud parent of five children. He may be known as one of the most iconic action heroes in history, but Willis is a total girl dad as the father of five daughters. For someone with such masculine energy onscreen, it’s surprising to find out he’s surrounded by so many women!

Rumer Willis, Bruce Willis’s oldest child, was born on Aug. 16, 1988. Her mother is Willis’s former wife, actress Demi Moore. Rumer was born in Paducah, Kentucky, where her father was filming In Country at the time. She spent the majority of her childhood in Hailey, Idaho, as her parents wanted to raise her outside of Hollywood.

Even so, Rumer has been acting since she was 5, when she made her onscreen debut in the classic coming-of-age film Now and Then. She followed that up with an appearance alongside her mother in Striptease, in which she played Moore’s onscreen daughter in the oft-mocked movie.

As the dominant action stars of the ’80’s and ’90’s, Schwarzenegger and Willis, along with “Rambo” actor Sylvester Stallone, were considered to be rivals in the acting world and part of a “holy trinity” in the action genre.

The trio were famously considered friends and in 1991 they backed the opening of the restaurant chain Planet Hollywood together.

When asked about Willis’ legacy, Schwarzenegger added, “I understand that under his circumstances, health-wise, that he had to retire. But in general, you know, we never really retire. Action heroes, they reload.”

In March 2022, Willis’ family — wife Emma Heming Willis, ex-wife Demi Moore and his three daughters with Moore — announced that the actor was retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, which is caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls language. Willis last starred in “Assassin,” which premiered this March.

The 75-year-old Schwarzenegger, on the other hand, has remained in the spotlight and is seeing something of a reload himself, landing Netflix’s action series FUBAR, marking the star’s first headlining role on scripted live-action show in his 50+-year career. And now that he has the completely made-up but fitting title Chief Action Officer, it doesn’t seem he’ll be retiring anytime soon–especially if the right Marvel role comes up.

Despite being two of the most genre-defining action stars of their era, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger only share two credits: 2010’s The Expendables and its first sequel, released in 2012. Their biggest partnership actually came in the restaurant business, backing Planet Hollywood alongside Sylvester Stallone. Fittingly, the alcoholic options included the Die Harder (rums, blue curaçao and more “team up to save the day”) and The Terminator, a disgusting-sounding concoction of gin, Kahlua, beer and more that the menu promises “will leave you saying, ‘I’ll be back.’”
