UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers, Portugal vs Liechtenstein Highlights: Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for the most international caps as Portugal played Liechtenstein on Thursday and celebrated the milestone with a record-extending goal. Ronaldo, who turned 38 last month, won his 197th cap, surpassing Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa, as he returned to the starting line-up and captained his country in their Euro 2024 Group J qualifier at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
He converted a 51st-minute penalty – his first goal against the tiny Alpine principality – as the home side went 3-0 up after being only one goal ahead at the break. He would then go on to score a blistering free kick from the edge of the penalty area to complete his brace as Portugal went on to win 4-0.
While Ronaldo fell out of favour under Santos, Martinez has stressed his willingness to use Ronaldo regardless of the 38-year-old’s age.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who is very committed to the national team,” Martinez said.
“A player like Cristiano brings experience, he is an important figure in the team. I don’t look at age or other aspects.
“I think Cristiano has an opportunity to help the team and transmit the experience of his career to the other players.”

Ronaldo had been benched by former coach Fernando Santos for Portugal’s final two games at last year’s World Cup in Qatar where they lost in the quarterfinals to Morocco. Former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez replaced Santos and was managing his first game as coach of Portugal.
Ronaldo is currently playing with Saudi club Al Nassr after an acrimonious departure from Manchester United ahead of the World Cup, but Martinez said the door is still open for the country’s biggest star to carry on with the national team.
“It’s a new cycle. It’s important for a player to show commitment and that we can use his experience, and Cristiano shows that,” Martinez added.
