Rihanna has left fans eager for new music since the release of her most recent album, 2016’s Anti. Since then, the star has launched her Savage X Fenty lingerie line, skyrocketed her Fenty Beauty makeup company and even welcomed a son with A$AP Rocky.
The musical drought changed in the fall of 2022, when Rihanna was announced as the halftime performer for Super Bowl LVII and the singer unveiled “Lift Me Up” off the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. But what will taking the stage at the big game on Sunday (Feb. 12) mean for RiRi and what will it add to her legacy?
What they’re saying: Rihanna spoke Thursday at the Apple Music press conference about being asked to do the show three months after having her son.
- “When you become a mom there’s something that happens where you feel like you can take on the world and can do anything,” she said.
- “The Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world. As scary as it was, because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all. It’s important for me to do this year. It’s important for my son to see that.”

Over the years she has confirmed it’s a reggae album (2018), that it’s reggae-inspired and -infused (2019), that she was in the studio with The Neptunes (2020), that she just wants to have fun with her music (later in 2020), that she was taking her music and the rest of her brands to a “new level” in 2021 (end of 2020), that the new music was coming “soon soon soon” (2021), that it was going to be her “best album to this day” (2022).
Again, Rihanna gets to do what she wants, and we’ll be lucky and grateful to receive it whenever she does. On Sunday, the NFL will play its little game, but Rihanna is the one running the show.
