Filming for The “Equalizer 3”, starring Denzel Washington, is underway in the seaside town of Maiori on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
As fans eagerly await the third installment, the movie has hit headlines under deeply unfortunate circumstances.
On Monday, October 31, the head caterer for the movie, named in reports as MB, suffered a fatal heart attack outside a pub in the town.
His death sparked an official drug search of the catering staff hotel rooms after cocaine was reportedly found in his pocket.
The two caterers, who were both over the age of 30, were arrested for possession of drugs for the purpose of dealing after local carabinieri police seized the drugs, according to reports.
The suspects are under house arrest at the hotel and waiting on judicial authority.
The police search yielded 120 grams of cocaine and led to two other members of the film’s catering vendor being placed under house arrest in the hotel on alleged drug dealing charges. A third employee of the catering company was found in possession of a small amount of cocaine and had his drivers’ license pulled. In addition to the hotel, police searched an area of Maiori’s small port where production of the film has set up camp, the newspaper reported.
The alleged illegal activity did not occur on the set of The Equalizer 3, as far as the police are aware. As the catering workers operated under an independent contractor, it is currently being treated as a separate case. Hence, the production will not be postponed as a result of the incident.
Production for The Equalizer 3 began last month. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua and also stars Dakota Fanning, who previously worked alongside Washington in 2004’s Man on Fire.
The Equalizer 3, which is the fifth collaboration between director Antoine Fuqua and Washington, kicked off principal photography last month on the Amalfi Coast. Filming is expected to continue until later this month, with production to move to Naples in December, and Rome in January, 2023. Washington will be joined in the third entry by series newcomer Dakota Fanning, who he also starred with in the Tony Scott-directed action thriller Man on Fire in 2004.
Plot details for the film remain under wraps, but Italian actress Gaia Scodellaro has also been confirmed to star. The Equalizer 3 marks Washington’s first major on-screen role since Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, which earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards earlier this year.
The ‘ Equalizer 3 ‘ is expected to premiere on September 1st, 2023.
