Ever since the first sneak-peek was released at D23, anticipation for the Halle Bailey-led live action adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid has been steadily growing. Within days that first clip, which featured Bailey performing a stunning rendition of “Part of Your World,” had garnered over 104 million views globally. And now, with the film only a handful of months away, Disney has finally released the first proper trailer that gives audiences a better look at Ariel’s underwater world.
While the first teaser showcased Ariel and her showstopping number, the new trailer gives us a better look at some of the major players in Ariel’s story and centers around her desire to be a part of the surface world. From her daring rescue of Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) and their blossoming romance, to the stern reaction of her father King Triton (Javier Bardem), it all builds up to her encounter with the sinister sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), who brings a perfect campy, dramatic flair to the role.
When it was announced that a Black woman would play Ariel, some Twitter users erupted with the #NotMyAriel hashtag. The actor told Variety she turned to her grandparents for advice who provided their stories of racism amid the storm. “It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,’” Bailey said.
The thought of inspiring young girls with the representation she did not have growing up also helped during the backlash, she said. “What that would have done for me, how that would have changed my confidence, my belief in myself, everything,” Bailey said. “Things that seem so small to everyone else, it’s so big to us.”
Miranda, Marshall, Russell Allen, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Michael Zimmer are producing the live-action remake. Allison Erlikhman is serving as executive producer for the film with Jane Goldman and David Magee writing it.
In addition to Bailey as Ariel, the live action Little Mermaid stars Melissa McCarthy as conniving sea witch Ursula, Javier Bardem as overprotective King Triton, and Jonah Hauer-King as the dashing Prince Eric, with Daveed Diggs voicing musical crab Sebastian, Awkwafina voicing zany seagull Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay voicing Flounder, Ariel’s best fishy friend.
Even a glimpse of a small red crab – presumably Sebastian, voiced by Daveed Diggs – was shown.
The trailer appeared to show brief snippets from some of the movie’s highly anticipated musical numbers, including “Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl.”
The new film is a live-action version of the 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid,” which won two Academy Awards – best original song for “Under the Sea” and best original score.
