That will complete our pre-season preparation on the field, ahead of a Community Shield clash with Arsenal on 6 August.
With the Blues looking to defend our three trophies while also competing in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup for the first time, it’s sure to be an exciting season.
While viewers in the UK can watch the action in all three games on tour via CITY+ or Recast, a host of broadcasters around the world will also be showing our clash with Thomas Tuchel’s team.
At the Bundesliga champions’ camp in picturesque Tegernsee, Jamal Musiala opened the scoring for Thomas Tuchel’s side after three minutes, with Serge Gnabry doubling the lead a minute later. By the 13th minute it was 5-0, Musiala and Gnabry both having scored twice, with the Canada international Alphonso Davies adding the third on eight minutes.
By half-time it was 18-0: Mathys Tel and Musiala both scored five goals, with a hat-trick for Gnabry. Konrad Laimer, Noussair Mazraoui, Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sané were also on the scoresheet.
Bayern’s meeting with the treble-winning Manchester City in Japan, on 26 July, is likely to be a tougher test, with pre-season fixtures against Liverpool, in Singapore, and Monaco also booked in.
The South Korea defender, Kim Min-jae, was there to watch his new teammates in action after completing his transfer from the Italian champions Napoli, signing a five-year contract. Bayern did not disclose the transfer fee but according to German and Italian media they paid a release clause worth €50m (£43m) for the player.
“FC Bayern is a dream for every footballer,” Kim said. “I’m really looking forward to what’s to come in Munich. It’s a new beginning for me. I’ll continue to develop here.
“In discussions with the club, it was made clear to me from the start how interested they are in me. My first goal is to play a lot of games. In addition, I want to win as many trophies as possible.”
Sophia Smith, United States
Smith may be a World Cup newcomer, but she’s expected to skip past the learning curve as one of the U.S. women’s national team’s undisputed starters in attack. The 22-year-old forward steadily earned a starting spot over the last year after impressing for club and country, and is on a hot streak — Smith has 10 goals and five assists for the Portland Thorns so far this season.
Sam Kerr, Australia
All eyes will be on Kerr, who hopes to continue her reputation as one of the best goalscorers in the world at a World Cup on home soil. The 30-year-old is coming off a 29 goal season across all competitions for Chelsea and will be the make-or-break factor for the co-hosts, who are considered a dark horse contender to win the whole thing.
Switzerland is a team that might be slept on in light of being drawn into a group with World Cup co-host New Zealand and debutant Phillippines. They are making their second appearance in the tournament, after a run into the knockout rounds back in 2015 where they were eliminated by Canada. Manager Inka Grings has been with the squad since last year, and immediately implemented adjustments, using different formations, typically with four in the back.
They have struggled to pick up a win this year, with five draws across six competitions, and a 2-1 loss against Iceland. They’ll have a tough test against Norway, first-time Phillippines, and when they go up against tournament hosts New Zealand on July 31, it will be the final match in the group and could be for high stakes and a place in the knockout rounds.
The club’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidžić, was famously fired after Bayern clinched an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title on the final day of the season. Bayern were second going into the final round, where they beat Borussia Dortmund to the title thanks to a late goal from Musiala coupled with Dortmund’s draw with Mainz.
In South Korea international Kim, who was in attendance for the game on Tuesday, Bayern are adding a towering and versatile defender who helped Napoli to a first Serie A title in three decades.
“He impresses with his physical presence, as well as his mentality and speed,” Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said. “We’re pleased he can immediately take part fully in preseason and firmly believe that he will also excite our fans with his style of play.”
Bayern have high-profile friendlies against Premier League champions Manchester City and Liverpool on the horizon before beginning Bundesliga play on Aug. 18 at Werder Bremen. The first official match of the season for Tuchel & Co. comes on Aug. 12 against RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena in Munich in the German Super Cup.
