A late goal from Sheffield United’s John Egan put the brakes on a blockbuster win for Wrexham in a 3-3 FA Cup draw at the Racecourse Ground on Sunday.
Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were on the verge of recording an upset win over the Championship club before Egan scored from a corner in the 95th minute to force a replay.
Wrexham AFC are still with a shot of becoming just the sixth non-league team to reach the FA Cup fifth round after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Sheffield United at the Racecourse Ground on Sunday. The Wales-based side play in the National League, which is the fifth tier of professional English soccer, and three levels below the Blades who they have now taken to a replay.
Anything below League Two, which is the fourth tier of the English game, is traditionally considered “non-league,” and Wrexham are the latest club of that standing to threaten a major upset. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of the 158-year-old club has been controversial since their 2020 takeover but it ensured that all eyes were on the Red Dragons in the U.S.
One of the most surprising stories in English football hopes to continue its impressive run in the current FA Cup season, as Wrexham prepares to host Sheffield United in the fourth round on Sunday.
The team trying to burst Wrexham’s bubble is a club poised to make the jump to the Premier League. In the Championship table, Sheffield United sits in second place with 57 points, five back of league-leading Burnley, with 13 points separating them from third-place Watford. Sheffield is two years removed from back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in the FA Cup, prior to falling in the third round last season. This will be the second road contest for Sheffield United, as they opened up their season with a 2-0 win in the third round against Millwall back on Jan. 7.
“I thought we were the better team throughout the game, creating chances and looking dangerous on the break. We limited them to not many chances in open play.”
In the stands, Reynolds went from joy to despair, and punch-the-air ecstasy to desolation as he and one of his daughters had flown in for the fourth-round match at the atmospheric ground about 28 miles south of Liverpool.
