Reed fuels feud with logo placement
The British Open has done its best to stay away from the stench of LIV Golf – even barring two-time champion Greg Norman from attending any events at St Andrews this week.
But 24 players who are part of the rebel Saudi-backed league are taking part in the 150th Open this week, including American villain Patrick Reed.
Reed is far from the most popular guy on tour, and his latest stunt is sure to rankle a fair few people.
He wore a LIV Golf hat during his practice rounds, and showed up to the first tee for the Open wearing it again.
Bryson dropped by sponsor on the eve of The 150th Open Championship
Bryson Dechambeau has been dropped by a major sponsor over his defection to the LIV Golf tour.
Bridgestone had been DeChambeau’s ball supplier since he turned pro in 2016, but this week announced they were dropping the 2020 US Open winner.
He will continue to use the Tour B X ball at this weeks Open Championship at The Old Course at St Andrews.
Golf Digest reported a source told the publication the split was “amicable”.
Bridgestone is a major sponsor of the PGA Tour, which DeChambeau abandoned for an eye-watering $185 million deal to join LIV Golf.
During a practice round this week, Golf Magazine writer Dylan Dethier tweeted he had watched DeChambeau hit a 6-iron more than 300 yards.
Golfers have been greeted by rock hard fairways, with balls bouncing and running much further than normal.
While conditions during practice rounds have been ideal, wind and weather is expected for the weekend. Because of course it is – it’s The Open.

Dustin Johnson was welcomed back from the LIV Golf tour during the practice rounds on the Links of St Andrews.

If Adam Scott turns it on with the putter this week, he could be a chance to win The 150th Open.
Beach days for American star
The Old Course has 112 bunkers, despite the fact the 1st and the 18th don’t have any.

Roughing it
One of the characteristics of links golf is its virtual tree-less landscape, but that doesn’t mean there’s no trouble.
For those who miss the fairway, the long grass can easily swallow a ball, and if you do find it, just getting it out with your first try is a win.

Hard surfaces
While some have said the fairways at St Andrews are hard as a road this weekend, there are several places on the course where actual roads are very much in play.
This is Takumi Kanaya hitting off the famous Old Station Road adjacent to the 17th green at The Old Course.
Lonely place for a golfer
Even when it’s packed full of people, The Old Course can be a lonely place if playing poorly.
Hopefully Will Zalatoris won’t have that problem this weekend.
The Tiger lurks
Tiger Woods has won two Opens at the Old Course, in 2000 and 2005.
As at Thursday afternoon (AEST), Tiger is a $67 outsider. Rory McIlroy will tee off a $10 favourite.
The Open weather
One of the things St Andrews is renowned for is the unpredictability of the weather.
It can be beautiful and clear one minute, before fog and rain can roll in the next.

Anne are you OK
Princess Anne is a known golf fan, and an honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews.
She was among the first group of women given the title when the club first accepted women in February 2015.
Golf’s best Mullet
Aussie Cam Smith has been in red-hot form of late – particularly with a wedge in his hand.
While conditions are not expected to suit Smith, he’s still one of the top favourites.
Bunkered
The pot bunkers at all of the St Andrews courses are notoriously deep.
Many a strong showing has been ruined by a ball lying too close to the face of one of these menacing bunkers.
Hideki Matsuyama will no doubt do everything in his power to miss them this week.
