The Green Bay Packers are trading their star quarterback to the New York Jets for the 13th overall pick, plus second and sixth-round selections in this year’s draft as well as a conditional 2024 second-round pick (which can become a first round pick if Rogers plays 65% of this year’s snaps.) The Jets will get Rodgers, the No. 15 overall pick and a fifth-round pick this year.
After months of uncertainty about his status, Rodgers, a 10-time Pro Bowler and future NFL Hall of Famer is bucking retirement and joining the Jets, who started last season 5-2 before losing their final six games and missing the playoffs for a 12th straight season. The Packers will suffer a $40 million dead cap hit next season for dealing Rodgers, but they can finally start writing the franchise’s next chapter behind fourth-year quarterback Jordan Love.
The Jets won’t be hit too hard by the Rodgers acquisition, as they’re slated to absorb a $15 million cap hit in 2023 and $32 million in 2024. Also, the team converted tight end CJ Uzomah’s $4.5 million salary into a signing bonus, and they restructured contracts for DJ Reed, Laken Tomlinson and Tyler Conklin to create more than $15 million in cap space, possibly to make room for the 10-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer.
The Rodgers trade has been in the works for more than a month, with Jets general manager Joe Douglas telling a crowd of fans earlier in April that the trade would indeed happen. Now it has.
The trade completion ends a long saga between both teams especially the Packers who seemed determined to receive what they felt was adequate compensation despite the star quarterback saying that he wanted to play elsewhere.
The Jets have made other notable off-season moves meanwhile. They got some more protection for the new quarterback by re-signing starting center Connor McGovern and signed former Commanders guard Wes Schweitzer. Earlier this off-season they also signed former Packers QB Tim Boyle and former Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard. The two were seen working out together in California earlier this month.
“It wouldn’t have been the end of the world,” Gutekunst said. “But at the same time, I think it would have certainly changed things quite a bit. So, getting it done was important. I just think certainly the capital for this year was very important, certainly more valuable than future stuff, for our football team. So, there were a number of reasons, but that’s why.”
The blockbuster comes 40 days after Rodgers announced on “The Pat McAfee Show” that his “intention” was to play for the Jets in 2023, triggering intermittent negotiations between the Jets and Packers that dominated the NFL headlines.
The two sides talked for weeks before talks broke down, then discussions heated up again late last week. Finally, Jets general manager Joe Douglas and Gutekunst were able to bridge their differences and come to an agreement.
With Rodgers now traded to New York, the Jets are expected to become prime-time darlings when the NFL schedule is released next month and could play up to six prime-time games, sources told Schefter. They had one last year, a Thursday night home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After the trade, the Jets’ odds at Caesars Sportsbook to win the Super Bowl are 14-1, while the Packers’ are 50-1. The Jets’ odds to make the playoffs are at -150, while the Packers’ are at +170. Rodgers’ odds to be named the NFL’s MVP are at 18-1, the seventh-shortest among all players.
For the Jets, frustrated by years of losing and inferior quarterback play, it’s arguably the biggest trade in their history, reminiscent of the Brett Favre swap with the Packers in 2008.
“I made it clear my intention was to play and to play for the New York Jets,” he said last month on an episode of The Pat McAfee Show, adding that he was not “holding anything up.”
He said at the time that the Packers also wanted “to move on and have let me know that in so many words.”
Adam Schefter, Rodgers is expected to give up the No. 12 he wore for the Wisconsin team for 18 years — even though Joe Namath, the Jet who retired the number in New York, had offered to unretire the number for the star. Instead, Rodgers will don the No. 8, which he wore in his college playing days at the University of California, Berkeley.
Despite all the personal successes, Rodgers and the Packers failed to win more championship rings, wracking up numerous painful playoff losses over the years.
In recent years, Rodgers has voiced a creeping dissatisfaction with events in Green Bay, from the lack of offensive weapons he’s had to work with to the drafting of his apparent heir, Jordan Love, in the first round of the 2020 draft.
Rodgers had hinted that retirement was an option on more than one occasion, and even visited a darkness retreat this offseason as he sought clarity on his future.
Though his ability to avoid on-rushing defenders may have diminished with age, Rodgers has more than made up for it with his precision and canniness before the snap, while he has the knack of maneuvering defenses to his will.
Last season, the Packers started poorly but Rodgers lead the team on a four-game winning streak from a 4-8 record to help set up a Week 18 game with the Detroit Lions for a spot in the playoffs. Green Bay lost 20-16 to end the Packers’ season.
