FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott posted on social media Monday that he is signing with the New England Patriots.
Elliott tweeted, “One Five, all the way live ! @Patriots,” referencing his plans to wear jersey No. 15, the number he wore in college while playing for Ohio State. He wore No. 21 with the Cowboys.
Elliott agreed to terms with the Patriots on a one-year deal, helping address one of the thinnest positions on the roster, a source confirmed to ESPN. Elliott’s one-year deal with the Patriots includes a $3 million base salary and a $1 million signing bonus that can be worth up to $6 million with incentives, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Last year, however, Elliott ran for a career-low 876 yards and averaged a career-worst 3.8 yards per carry. His massive six-year, $90 million deal with the team became too much, and the team released him earlier this summer. The Cowboys used the franchise tag on running back Tony Pollard after failing to reach a long-term deal with him this summer. Pollard is recovering from a broken fibula, but he’s expected to be ready to go by Week 1. The Cowboys also brought in Ronald Jones this past offseason, but he was suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
Elliott has been without a home ever since. Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones hinted at a possible reunion earlier this month, but now that’s off the table. The Cowboys will host the Patriots on Oct. 1, however, so Elliott will get a return trip to Dallas quickly.
Although his tenure with the Cowboys came to an unceremonious end this offseason, Elliott will have a rightful Dallas homecoming in Week 4 when the Patriots come to town.
Elliott ranks third on the Cowboys’ all-time rushing list with 8,262 yards behind Hall of Famers Tony Dorsett (12,036) and Emmitt Smith (17,162), the NFL’s all-time leading rusher.
While he may not be in his prime, Elliott could prove to be extremely valuable to the Patriots, particularly in the red zone. All 12 of Elliott’s rushing touchdowns in 2022 came in the red area while 11 of those came inside the 10-yard line. New England ranked dead last in the NFL in red zone efficiency last year, so Elliott’s knack for end zone could be a missing piece to this revamped offense under new OC Bill O’Brien, while also keeping Stevenson fresh down the stretch.
