The National Weather Service has placed most of Waukesha and Milwaukee counties under a flash flood warning, as thunderstorms continue to rumble through the area.
Roughly 1¾ inches of rain fell in a span of 45 minutes at the airport, the NWS said in a tweet. “Anything over an inch is considered heavy rain,” said NWS meteorologist Marcia Cronce.
The NWS said that more than 1 million people could be effected by floods and that people should not attempt to walk or drive in flood waters.
“What’s happening is the roads are filling up with water, the streets, side roads, low-lying areas, the creeks are rising. And it’s because heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain are tracking over the same areas over and over and over again. And we’ve seen about two to three inches of rain already in that area with another inch expected,” said Cronce.
Some received an emergency alert message on their phones, warning of flash flooding in the area and telling people not to travel.
It has been a muggy day across the area, but the lakefront stayed cooler with a NE breeze. Milwaukee was in the 70s while areas well inland were near 90 with a heat index near 100. T’storms have fired up this evening across southern WI and severe storms near Jansville. Walworth and Jefferson counties are under a severe storm watch until midnight tonight. While the severe storms look to be staying south of Milwaukee and Waukesha, most us of will still see some rain overnight from a large storm rolling through Minnesota. It would be here well after midnight and should not be severe. Wednesday is still muggy and mostly cloudy with highs in the 70s and some scattered showers during the day.
Rain is likely Wednesday night into Thursday ahead of the next cold front. Thursday is 77 and humid. Behind the front, Friday is windy, less humid and comfortable with temps in the 70s. A NE breeze will gust to 25 mph. Saturday is sunny and breezy with dry air and highs in the 70s. Sunday is a great day with highs near 80. Monday will be warm and humid with highs in the mid 80s and scattered t’storms.
