Warriors Hopeful Steph Curry Returns From Injury Next Week, Bob Myers Says

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry officially had his injury reevaluated on Wednesday, and the team announced an update shortly after with a press release.

“Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, who has missed the last nine (9) games after suffering partial tears to his superior tibio fibular ligaments and interosseous membrane, as well as a contusion to his left lower leg on February 4 vs. Dallas, was recently re-evaluated,” the Warriors wrote. “He is making good progress and has recently increased his on-court workload to include scrimmaging. Curry’s return-to-play will be based on his continued progress and response to full practice and scrimmages after missing nearly a month of game action.”

While the Warriors did not provide a potential return date, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported, “ESPN Sources: There’s optimism Golden State’s Steph Curry (left lower leg) will return sometime on next week’s three-game road trip, which begins Sunday vs. Lakers. Warriors play Thunder on Tuesday and Grizzlies on Thursday. Curry has been out since suffering injury on Feb. 4.”

The Warriors have found themselves back in the 5th seed, partially due to their improved play, and partially due to the Western Conference’s mediocrity. Once again sitting in the middle of the playoff picture, the Warriors feel they are well positioned to make a run once Steph Curry returns, which could be this weekend.

The Los Angeles Lakers were already without LeBron James, and then things got worse.

The Lakers have ruled out Anthony Davis with a right foot stress injury for Wednesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, adding to the team’s injury woes since a transformative trade deadline.

The site of the injury is particularly concerning given that the All-Star missed 20 games earlier this season with a fractured bone spur and stress reaction in the same foot. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham told reporters later Wednesday that sitting Davis is a precautionary move, but will need to go through testing before he’s cleared to play again.

But here’s where the quirk comes in: teams can only use their two-way contracts for 90 games if their roster isn’t full. In order to access the final 10 games, they need to have the 15 spots on the roster filled.

You can probably guess where this is going. After Tuesday’s comeback win over the Portland Trail Blazers, Anthony Lamb (47 games) and Ty Jerome (43 games) have combined to play 90 games. If the Warriors want to play either on Thursday when they host the Los Angeles Clippers, they need to add a 15th player to the roster … and that’s where Quiñones comes in.

Per CBA rules, NBA teams with only 14 players on roster are allowed only 90 combined active games from its pair of two-way contracts, while teams with 15 players on roster can use the full 100 combined active games (50 games apiece).

The Warriors have kept their 15th roster spot open all season. But Golden State needed to fill it because Lamb (47 games) and Jerome (43 games) reached their combined 90-game limit in the Warriors’ comeback win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.

If the Warriors officially sign Quiñones to the 10-day contract, they will clear Lamb for another three contests and Jerome for another seven.

Eventually, Golden State will have to make a decision on Lamb and Jerome. Two-way contract players are not eligible for the playoffs. The Warriors are expected to sign Lamb or Jerome as the 15th member of their roster, whichever one the front office foresees will have a bigger role in the playoff rotation.
