A winter storm warning begins tonight in Wyoming County, while Genesee, Livingston and Orleans counties are subject to winter weather advisories as the region anticipates several inches of snow through Saturday.

Rain this afternoon is expected to change to snow late in the day and this evening with steady widespread snow anticipated tonight. Several inches of wet snow will accumulate by daybreak Saturday with additional accumulations expected as the day wears on, the National Weather Service said in a forecast discussion this morning.

The highest accumulations will be from the higher terrain of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes to the eastern Lake Ontario region, the Weather Service said.

Overnight snowfall amounts will generally range from 2 to 4 inches, with 4- to 6-inch amounts possible in the warned areas. As is often the case with early and late season synoptic events accumulations are closely tied to elevation, the Weather Service said.

The winter storm warning will be in effect from 7 tonight to 6 p.m. Saturday for Wyoming and southern Erie counties and the western Southern Tier.

Heavy snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Wings may gust as high as 45 mph, according to the Weather Service.

Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, the Weather Service said.

Temperatures will fall through the 20s during the day Saturday. Wind chill values falling into the single digits to near zero, the Weather Service said.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 7 tonight to 6 p.m. Saturday for Genesee, Orleans, Niagara, and northern Erie counties.

Snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches and winds gusting as high as 45 mph, the Weather Service said.

A separate winter weather advisory will be in effect from 7 tonight to 6 p.m. Saturday for Livingston, Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties.

Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches is expected, with winds gusting as high as 45 mph, the Weather Service said.

Temperatures will fall through the 20s during the day Saturday. Wind chill values falling into the single digits.

Periods of snow will result in snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. Slow down and use caution while driving, advises the Weather Service.

A winter weather advisory begins at 10 tonight for Steuben, Schuyler, Seneca and Yates counties. The advisory will be in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday.

Snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph, the Weather Service said.

Steady snow could produce snowfall rates around 1 inch per hour for a time late tonight into Saturday morning, according to the Weather Service.
