The Memphis Grizzlies have been banged up badly and just suffered another blow to their already depleted depth. Dillon Brooks is now sidelined as he enters the NBA’s health and safety protocols.
Several teams throughout the NBA are experiencing outbreaks of COVID-19, filling up the league’s health and safety protocols. The Chicago Bulls have several players in the protocols, and the Indiana Pacers may soon see that happen, too, with head coach Rick Carlisle entering protocols.
Brooks, who has appeared in 12 games this season and started in 11 of them, is averaging 17.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He is the team’s second-leading scorer behind star point guard Ja Morant, who is also in the league’s health and safety protocols.
Morant was already sidelined before entering the protocols yesterday due to a left knee sprain. His absence could be problematic for Memphis moving forward, though the team won five straight games after their leading scorer and playmaker went down. But now with Brooks out, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane will need to continue ramping up their production.
The unfortunate series of absences to key players has thrown a wrench into an otherwise promising season for Memphis, who is currently fourth in the Western Conference. Still, the Grizzlies have posted a negative net rating, suggesting they aren’t as good as their record indicates. Maintaining some balance as they get healthier could allow them to stay in the playoff picture.
The Grizzlies face the Los Angeles Lakers at home on Thursday night.
