GM unveils redesigned 2024 Chevy Traverse with more power, bigger technology, bold look

It’s been 15 years since Chevrolet first entered the large three-row crossover segment with the Traverse and in the intervening years, that segment has grown by more than two and a half times. It’s been partly organic growth for some models but mostly a bunch of new entries including the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, and VW Atlas. In that time, there have been only two generations of the Traverse and the current iteration has been around since 2017. That means it’s time for a full redesign with the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse hitting the streets early next year.

Chevrolet unwrapped the new Traverse at an event at its Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant in Michigan where it is built alongside the Buick Envoy. It’s by no means an exaggeration to say that over the past decade most crossovers whether large or small have looked all too similar.

Four trim levels are available for the 2024 Chevy Traverse, including LS, LT, Z71, and RS. As GM Authority was first to report, the formerly range-topping High Country trim has been dropped from the lineup, and so has the Premier. Meanwhile, the 2024 model year sees the addition of the off-road focused Z71 trim, as we exclusively reported in May.

The star feature of the crossover’s fully overhauled cabin is the “best-in-class” 17.7-inch diagonal color infotainment touchscreen equipped as standard across all trim levels. The cockpit sports a redesigned steering wheel while the interior overall gets more space, improved ergonomics, new colorways, and higher-quality materials.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse offers seating for seven or eight passengers depending on trim level and 98 cubic feet of cargo space with all rear seating rows folded down.

Framed by an all-new, more purposeful silhouette, the styling of the redesigned Traverse balances crossover- and truck-inspired design elements to give the vehicle a rugged, ready-for-anything presence.

A planted stance, with wheels pushed to the corners and strong-appearing shoulders, add to the commanding presence.

“The bold exterior of the all-new Traverse helps redefine its role and capability for customers,” said Phil Zak, executive design director, Global Chevrolet. “It is as versatile as ever, but with an increased focus on capability that reflects the spirit of its owners.”

Of course, the Traverse is fitted with a host of driver assistance technologies to keep the whole family safe, including standard lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and forward-collision warning. The Traverse can also be fitted with adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, reverse automatic braking, and a suite of parking cameras and sensors. Every Traverse gets a new “Buckle to Drive” system which requires the front occupants to strap in before getting underway, while a rear seatbelt reminder prompts occupants in the back to do the same.

The Traverse will also be offered with the latest version of Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system that takes over steering, acceleration, and braking duties on divided highways. The system now automatically executes lane changes and still works when towing a trailer.

Sales of the 2024 Traverse will begin early next year, with production taking place at GM’s Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan. Pricing will be announced closer to the start of production, and we expect a slight increase over the outgoing model, with prices starting around $39,000. While the range currently tops out with the RS, a luxe High Country trim might join the lineup in the near future.

“Even as GM has all new exciting EV launches around the corner that are in the limelight, vehicles like the Traverse hold up GM’s bread and butter of the business,” said Ivan Drury, director of Insights at Edmunds. “A solid seller, competing in one of the most competitive segments within the industry. Loyalty is built with vehicles like Traverse that allow levels of all-round box checking; getting Traverse right can lay solid groundwork for cousins GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6.”

The Traverse is Chevrolet’s bestselling midsize SUV behind the Equinox. In the first half of this year, GM sold 68,681 Traverses — a 55% gain compared with the year-ago period — and 105,851 Equinox midsize SUVs— a decline of 9.3% compared with the year-ago period.

For the auto industry as a whole, midsize SUVs are the second-largest-selling segment of cars in the United States behind small SUVs, Drury said. Year-to-date, the top-selling segments are: compact SUVs, which made up 18.3% of the new cars sold; midsize SUVs, which made up 17.7%, and followed by large trucks at 10.5%. The pricing for midsize SUVs is also in a sweet spot, Drury said, noting the average transaction price year-to-date for a midsize SUV is $48,663 compared with $35,957 for compact SUVs and $62,383 for large trucks.
