Inside the Brain: How cellphones lead to distracted driving

As much as you might like to think you can multitask while driving, you can’t.

A study done at the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford recently illustrated what happens to your brain when you try to text and drive at the same time. Joe Baker, Ph.D., an instructor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences, states, “As you engage in more attention-grabbing activities, it shows in the prefrontal cortex and parietal cortex.” The prefrontal cortex is responsible for attention and memory, while the parietal cortex is responsible for the collection and processing of information. To put it in simpler terms, our attention is shifting from driving while trying to multitask or look at our phones.

The researchers conducted a realistic simulation in which participants “drove” through a 30-minute course. Researchers found that more blood shifted towards the prefrontal and parietal cortex when the iPhone was attended to. As mentioned, these cortexes are responsible for attention, therefore the participants were in “attention overload” while attempting to use their iPhone and drive. The researchers also found that drivers tended to ease up on the usage of the accelerator and brakes when paying attention to the phone.

If this study was conducted on a real road, the chances of participants crashing would be very high. The study goes to show the importance of shifting our behaviors while driving and further supports OnMyWays mission to make distracted driving a thing of the past.
