LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) – Manchester United crushed Newcastle United’s hopes of a claiming a first domestic trophy for nearly 70 years with a clinical 2-0 victory in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
Goals late in the first half by Casemiro and an own goal from Sven Botman silenced the hordes of Newcastle fans who flocked to the capital as Man United went on to lift the trophy for a sixth time.
While much of the build-up was about Newcastle’s first appearance in a major final since 1999, it was Erik ten Hag’s resurgent United who claimed the club’s first silverware since winning the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
There was little in the way of clear-cut chances in a frantic beginning, but United opened the scoring on 33 minutes with the first of two quickfire goals as stalwart midfielder Casemiro sent half of Wembley into pandemonium. Luke Shaw delivered a stooping ball in from a wide free kick and the Brazil international expertly glanced a header into the far corner. He was deemed to have been played marginally onside after a VAR check.
With the momentum in their favour, United doubled their lead six minutes later as Newcastle defender Botman guided Rashford’s effort into his own goal. Wout Weghorst burst forward and played Rashford in behind. The 25-year-old’s shot from a narrow angle was diverted up and over the stretching Loris Karius by Botman as United tightened their grip on the trophy.
The goal was initially ruled an own goal on Botman, but later on Sunday it was credited to Rashford, marking the England international’s first goal in a final in his seventh time playing in one.
Weghorst threatened again in first-half stoppage time with a well-struck effort from distance, but Karius who made his first start since February 2021 — was equal to it.
Carabao Cup final result: Man United vs Newcastle
Man United had just three days to prepare for this game after their thrilling Europa League victory over Barcelona, and it was with some relief for Red Devils fans that Marcus Rashford was named in the lineup despite carrying a knock from that game at Old Trafford.
It was a foul on Rashford that led to the opening goal from Casemiro, back from a domestic suspension in time for this game. Luke Shaw’s cross from the free-kick was too inviting to pass up, and Casemiro’s header was far too accurate for stand-in Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius, making his first appearance in senior football for nearly two years.
Rashford’s form since the 2022 World Cup has been simply sensational and, even in a game in which he was not at his best, it felt inevitable that he would have a major impact. After combining with Wout Weghorst, Rashford ran at Sven Botman and drilled a low shot that deflected off the centre-back’s foot and looped over the helpless Karius.

How to watch the Man United vs. Newcastle EFL Cup Final online from anywhere using a VPN
If you find yourself unable to view the game locally, you may need a different way to watch the game that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.
With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area.
