Comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted and opened the show by acknowledging the controversy surrounding it, joking he was chosen to host because he’s Black, and saying the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the ceremony, didn’t have any Black members “until George Floyd” died.
