Toho has announced a November 3rd 2023 theatrical release date for a new “Godzilla” film project from the company which originated the franchise.
Toho dropped the news as part of celebrations for ‘Godzilla Day’. Takashi Yamazaki will helm the project, but plot specifics are under wraps.
Yamazaki, 58, is perhaps best known for his film ‘Always: Sunset on Third Street’, for which he won the best director and best screenplay prizes at the Japanese Academy Awards in 2006.
The project is separate from the U.S.-based takes on the property, such as the upcoming “Godzilla vs. Kong 2” and the planned Apple TV+ series.
Though numerous animated projects have since happened, the last live-action Toho “Godzilla” was 2016’s “Shin Godzilla” which scored both good reviews and strong box-office.
All we know at this time is that Takashi Yamazaki (Lupin III: The First) is directing the new movie, which will be the 30th live action Godzilla film in Toho’s long-running franchise.
Godzilla is a huge, destructive, fictional sea monster, or kaiju, empowered by nuclear radiation, that first appeared in the 1954 film Godzilla.
According to the Godzilla Day broadcast, Godzilla Vs. Gigan Rex has finally premiered online for fans to see! A short 2019 fan film, G vs. is an officially supported sequel. Director Takuya Unishi drew on influences from Shin Godzilla (2016) and Monster Hunter. The opening narration is provided by Megumi Odaka, best known for playing Miki Segusa in six of the seven Heisei Godzilla films. (Godzilla vs. Biollante [1989], Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah [1991], Godzilla vs. Mothra [1992], Godzilla vs. Mecha Godzilla II [1993], Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla [1994], Godzilla vs. Destoroyeh [1995] ) Turns out that it could be Godzilla Jr., who survived the fight with Destroyer and Hessie occurs in the series continuity.
